SPECIFICS

Wildlife of Alaska is a 13-day wildlife-viewing odyssey that takes you from Fairbanks in Alaska's interior to the remote west coast of Cook Inlet to view Alaska's legendary wildlife.

Physical requirements:
While it’s possible to enjoy Alaska in an armchair fashion, the Wildlife of Alaska tour is enhanced by the opportunities to be out in the relative wilderness areas we visit. Expect hikes of up to three miles over gentle terrain. Our day of sea kayaking in Homer is not a marathon. An average amount of physical prowess is all that’s required to cruise with the group. The day of bear observation includes a primarily flat land walk of up to several miles. At Camp Denali, you’ll have your choice of day hikes rated by level of strenuousness.

Diet:
Highly specialized diets may be difficult to accommodate in some of the remote locations visited on the Wildlife of Alaska tour. More common diet limitations (vegetarian, for example) and/or allergies shouldn’t be a problem. If there is a concern, contact us.

What to Wear:
We will be out in the elements in a variety of biomes. While mid-June is late enough in the year to limit the possibility of dealing with snow, cool temps, rain, and wind is always with us. Of course, so is warm sun. Dressing in layers with a lightweight, water-repellent outer shell is the best way to go. Bring a daypack large enough to stow unneeded layers, and you'll be able to meet any eventuality. Avoid cotton above the waist, as it keeps you cold if it becomes damp. Generally, denim jeans are OK. I like to carry a pair of rain chaps to block wind and rain. For the boat trip, I wear long underwear so I’m comfortable out on the deck all day. There is a cabin to warm up in, but it won’t accommodate everyone at the same time. A good pair of lightweight hiking boots is better than sneakers for the outdoor excursions. Be sure you’ve worn them some before bringing them along. Good quality sunglasses are a must, and I like a full-brimmed hat to cut down on direct sun exposure and to deflect rain away from my neck and face.

What’s included:

  • All transportation while traveling within the state on the tour itinerary, including airport transfers in both Anchorage and Fairbanks.
  • All meals from your dinner the fly-in day through your breakfast on the fly-out day with two exceptions: the dinner on the first full day in Homer, and lunch the day we pass through Anchorage on our way to or from Seward.
  • All accommodations from the fly-in day through the night before the fly-out day.

Accommodations:
With the exception of our accommodations in Denali National Park, we stay in comfortable, modern hotels. In Denali we have the rare opportunity to stay at the world-renowned Camp Denali. While the semi-wilderness location dictates individual, unplumbed cabins, you'll find your stay is one of the absolute highlights of your trip with us. Its uncrowded location in the heart of Denali National Park is away from 95% of the other visitor accommodations. Each cabin looks south over Wonder Lake toward Mt. McKinley. Evening views of the mountain are a common event.

When not in Denali National Park, we travel in comfort in a deluxe, restroom-equipped motorcoach with over-sized seats for extra comfort.

The necessary disclaimer: It’s assumed that in signing up for a Wildlife of Alaska tour you understand that you will be out in remote, natural settings and that absolute control of conditions is not possible. While Laughing Raven Touring Co. maintains and operates its equipment in as safe a manner as possible, and contracts with vendors who do the same thing, not all conditions can be anticipated and prepared for.
